What is a home study? A home study is required for any type of adoption. It is a report written about you and your family based on documentation (including birth and marriage certificates, financial information, references, criminal records checks, parent autobiographies, and more) that you provide to ASIA. You will be required to complete adoption education courses, and we will assist you with those as well. You will meet with a social worker a minimum of four times, including at least one in-home visit with all household members present. The purpose of the home study is to write a report recommending your family for the child(ren) you wish to adopt. If you are adopting internationally ASIA will ensure that the report meets all the requirements for your placing agency, the foreign country, USCIS and the State. If you are adopting domestically ASIA will ensure that the report meets all State requirements. What is a Post Adoption Report? Once you are home with your child, one or more post adoption (or post placement) reports will be required. This is a time to meet with the social worker to discuss how everyone's adjustment is going and receive any support needed. If you adopted internationally the report will be sent to your placing agency for them to send to the country authority where you adopted your child. If you adopted domestically the report is given to your attorney to file with the court to finalize the adoption. The number of post placement reports you will be required to complete will depend on the state or country of your child's origin and your placing agency. ASIA has written home studies and post placement reports for families adopting from many countries, including, but not limited to China, Taiwan, Rwanda, Burundi, Lesotho, Vietnam, India, Ethiopia, and US. In addition to helping families with their home study and post placement reports, ASIA can also assist families with home study updates, amendments or addendums when needed. |
