Haiti Adoption Process and Glossary

haiti_flag_flyingWith the reopening of Haiti adoptions, it is expected that adoptions will take approximately 15-18 months from the time your dossier is submitted to Haiti to bringing your child home. Much of the adoption process is out of the hands of our agency and we ask for your patience for the things over which we have no control.

  • Complete Application and submit, along with the application fee, to the ASIA office. We will review your application to be certain you qualify for the program. If you think there may be anything out of the ordinary regarding your family and adopting from Haiti, please contact our Haiti Director who can contact our partner organizations for clarification and pre-approval. Once your application has been approved we will mail you all necessary contracts, including fee schedule.
  • Once all contracts have been signed and received by our agency we will begin working with you to complete your home study and dossier. This will include required education that we will provide to you as well as assistance in filing the appropriate USCIS paperwork required for international adoption. (approx. time frame: 3 - 6 months). Many documents are required for the dossier and our staff will assist you in obtaining the necessary documents, required notarizations and legalizations, and eventual translations.
  • Once your dossier is complete you are eligible to receive a referral of a child(ren). The referral will include a picture of the child, age, gender of the child, brief personality/development description and available test results for HIV, Hepatitis B and Sickle Cell Trait and Anemia.
  • Once you have accepted the referral of your child(ren), we will send your dossier to the office in Haiti.
  • At certain times throughout the adoption process you may be required to travel to Haiti for required purposes such as signing the I-600 or to appear before the court or some other official entity. While in Haiti for such trips you will have the opportunity to meet and bond with your child. This trip is usually 4 - 6 days long.
  • Once you have been officially matched with a child(ren), the crèche will keep us updated on the progress of your file as it moves through the various steps of the Haitian adoption process. The crèche staff will also provide updates and photos throughout the process.
  • When all of the required Haitian and U.S. government steps of the adoption process have been completed, you will travel to Haiti to bring home your child(ren)! This trip is generally 1 - 2 days long.
  • Post placement requirements: Program I: For His Glory Outreach requires the family to submit a post placement report completed by a licensed social worker within 3 months of the adoptive child arriving in the family's home. Maison also requires pictures and written updates from the adoptive family at 3 months and 12 months after the child arrives home to their new family.
