Q: How long does it take to adopt from Haiti? A: Families should allow three to six months to complete the home study process, to receive approval from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and to complete the dossier. Once the home study is complete the family is eligible to receive a referral. The length of time for a referral will depend on the children available in your requested parameters. Currently we anticipate it will be about 15-18 months from when your dossier is submitted to Haiti to bringing your child home. Q: Why use Associated Services for International Adoption (ASIA)? A: Our Haiti Director has previous experience in coordinating two Haiti adoption programs. At ASIA we are committed to ethical, professional and caring adoption services. We partner with For His Glory Outreach and Chances for Children because they are also ethical, professional and caring organizations who provide a safe and nurturing environment for the children in their care. Both For His Glory Outreach and Chances for Children have facilitated hundreds of successful Haiti adoptions and provide excellent services to the children and the adoptive families. Q: Must our family have any religious affiliation? A: Program I: Yes, families adopting through For His Glory Outreach must be Christian. Program II: Families adopting through Chances for Children do NOT need to have any religious affiliation. Q: What are the fees? A: Please see our separate Fee Schedule. Q: Do you accept applications from families outside the state of Oregon? If yes, how does that work? A: Yes, we do! You will need to contract with a local home study agency to conduct your home study and to file your I-600A petition with the local CIS office. We can assist you in finding a home study agency in your state and will work with the home study agency to ensure the home study meets Haiti adoption requirements. Q: Can I request a child of a specific age group, specific gender or a child with specific medical conditions? A: Yes, you can. We encourage you to discuss with your home study preparer and ASIA's Haiti Director about the type of child you think might best fit into your family. Q: Can we adopt more than one child at a time? A: Yes, you may adopt more than 1 child, related or unrelated, at a time. Q: Who matches children with families? A: Our partners will provide you with a referral that most closely matches the child you are requesting and are approved for in your home study. You will need to have a medical professional review the referral to offer a second opinion to your family. Q: How many trips will we need to make to Haiti? A: You will need to take a minimum of two trips to Haiti. The first required trip is after your dossier has entered IBESR. The purpose of this trip is to sign your I-600 and possibly appear before the judge. You will also meet your child and spend time getting to know him or her. The second required trip will be to bring your child home! Q: How long are the trips? A: The I-600 signing trip will be 4 - 6 days. Your pick up trip will be 1 - 2 days. Q: What will we know about our child before travel? A: Prior to travel you will receive pictures and a social history of your child, as well as frequent updates. You will also receive a medical report with comprehensive test results (the children are tested for HIV, Hepatitis B, and TB) and a copy of all the adoption legal work completed in Haiti. Q: What if I have more questions? A: Please contact Vicki Baker, our Haiti Director, at 503-224-1860 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . It is currently expected that the adoption process will take approximately 15-18 months from the time your dossier is submitted to Haiti. Please be aware that much of the Haitian adoption process is handled by the Haitian officials, over which our agency has no control.
