Congratulations! You have officially become a "Waiting Parent" in ASIA's Adoption Program. You must be wondering what will happen next in the adoption process. The following list outlines the basic steps from now to your travel.

What Am I Waiting For?

Translation and review of the home study
  • Receive home study
  • Translate into Taiwanese
  • Home study review
  • Match family with child in the order the home study is received
  • Guardian or parent reviews the adoptive family's file. If the adoptive family is not accepted, it becomes the next priority to be matched
Translation and review of the Dossier
  • Logged into the CCAA's system.
  • Translated into Chinese by CCAA appointed translators.
  • Reviewed by adoption officials at the CCAA's Department I in the order the dossier is received.
  • If Chinese adoption officials have questions, ASIA will work with the family to provide further documentation and explanation.
Referral of a Child
  • Family accepts referral and signs Power of Attorney and Adoption Agreement.
  • Prepare dossier documents. ASIA will authenticate.
  • Dossier sent to Taiwan.
  • Taiwan agency works with Taiwan court to finalize adoption.
  • Adoptive family will receive monthly updates on the child.
Referral of a Child
  • Once the dossier passes inspection in Department I, it is transferred to the Document Review Department II where a child is matched to her family. (This department maintains eligible children's profiles submitted by orphanages)
  • Match a child to the family.
  • Department II officials will send to ASIA:
    1. Medical and lab
    2. Three photos of the child
    3. "Letter of Seeking Confirmation from the Adopter"
    4. Child's Development Report
    5. Child's State of Growth
  • Once the family has reviewed the referral information, it decides to accept or not accept the referral.
Travel to Taiwan
  • The Taiwan agency finishes court procedure.
  • The Taiwan agency applies for the child's passport and US consulate paperwork.
  • When the paperwork is complete, the family can travel.
Travel to China
  • ASIA returns the signed acceptance confirmation to the CCAA.
  • Apply for a Chinese entry visa.
  • CCAA proceeds with the final approval and issues the travel notice.
  • ASIA receives the travel notice and makes appointments with Chinese provincial officials and U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou to legalize the adoption, and to make travel arrangements
  • Family books international flights
  • ASIA will arrange domestic travel.

Other Things to Do Before the Travel Date

Vaccinations

Vaccinations and inoculations are not required for entering China and Taiwan unless you are traveling from or via an infection area. However, the protect your own health, some physicians recommend Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Cholera, Tetanus, Typhoid, Influenza and Malaria vaccinations.

We highly suggest that you check with your family physician and the travel office of your local public health department for professional advice.

Apply for a Country Entry Visa

Entering Taiwan

  • If you are an US citizen, you do not need a Taiwan Entry Visa to go to Taiwan. If you are not a US citizen, please contact your program coordinator for Taiwan visa application information.
  • Your passport should be valid for six months from the intended date of entry into Taiwan.

Entering China

  • As a non Chinese citizen, you must have a valid passport and a valid visa to enter China. Obtain an entry visa from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Washington, D.C. or from one of the Consulate General's offices in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, or San Francisco. (Check with ASIA to see which Consular office covers your state of residence).
  • After you've obtained the visa application from the Consular office covering your state of residence, fill it out. Usually this is completed before you receive your "Notice of Coming to China for Adoption" issued by the CCAA. You will need:
    • One recent passport size photo (2"x2")
    • A money order. No personal checks are accepted by the Consular's office.
