Dear China Families in Process,
As I have written previously regarding the changing economics in China, general costs and fees are rising. There are multiple reasons for this, not the least of which is the slowly dropping value of the U.S. dollar to the Chinese RMB. We are seeing increases in the costs of in-country travel impacting everything from the cost of hotels and meals to the tipping of guides and drivers. As we have notified you previously, the CCAA has increased the dossier service and translation fees, impacting those of you still preparing your dossier. These fee changes have been posted to our website, should you want to review them.
The latest change impacts the orphanage fee you will pay when you travel to China to meet your child. Currently it appears that many orphanages are re-establishing fees and tying it to the exchange rate. The exchange rate has been steadily dropping (which costs us more in US dollars) over the past year or so and up to now orphanages have not adjusted for this. It now appears some of them are making about a 20% correction, which would bring the donation to around $3600 instead of $3000. ASIA will provide you with the most current information we have when you prepare to travel.
Until further notice, we recommend you plan for $3600 in new $100 bills to take with you to China. You can easily exchange the dollars for RMB if the orphanage wants the donation in RMB. Not all orphanages will ask for $3600, but we think it is better to be over prepared. Remember, as you near your travel date, we will provide you with as much timely detail about your child's orphanage fee as we have available to us.
